Marjan van Aubel, winner of the 2019 Public Award, designed the solar roof for the Dutch pavilion on show during The World Expo in Dubai in 2021.
Dutch Biotope
The Dutch Biotope is a circular climate system where energy, water and food solutions are connected. The stained-glass solar roof, its light reflections and many colours make the Dutch Biotope feel like a gigantic modern church. The panels are not only modular but also circular and made of organic materials, which is rare for solar panels.
Panels
The coloured panels are lightweight and made of PET, which makes them easily transportable. After the Expo 2020 Dubai, the roof will get a second life, so it was designed and developed in such a way that it can easily be taken apart and re-assembled. The graphic design is made with a coloured Moiré effect. When a visitor moves around the space, the lines and patterns interact with each other, creating beautiful light reflections in the pavilion.
Expo 2020 Dubai
Expo 2020 Dubai is a rather special instalment of the World Expo because it will be the first time for the event to take place in the region. The expo has been postponed until October 2021 (due to COVID-19) but once it continues it will be open to the public for 6 months, until January 2022.
