Smart Distancing System
The project
Smart Distancing System is Jólan van der Wiel and Nick Verstand’s answer to the question of how keeping distance can be made easier and more fun. Preferrably without stickers and lines on the ground. Smart Distancing System consists of a combination of self-authored software, motion tracking cameras and laser lights. The system projects circles or lines around one or two people and follows them in a given space. If other people come too close, the projection deforms and thus depicts the bubble in which people find themselves. Smart Distancing System is therefore not only about keeping distance, but also connects people in an enjoyable and safe way.
Expert panel
A somewhat more poetic yet practical approach to the one-and-a-half-metre measure. Smart Distancing System works more intuitively and is thereby less intrusive. Its playful character shifts the emphasis from ‘stay away’ to awareness in a refreshing and light-hearted way. The project is therefore also a friendly reflection on the surveillance society and the questions raised by the real-time tracking of people’s movements; it works for people instead of against them. Very well designed, from layout and technology to sound design, which adds an interesting extra dimension to the experience. The promise of smart signing makes us curious about future applications.
