STUDIO SABINE MARCELIS
MIRAGE
Het project
Mirage is a combination of reflective and sand-blasted glass and focuses on the interaction of light. Sabine Marcelis was asked by the Collectional Gallery in Dubai to create the piece. The wall sections create a soft diffusion of artificial light and a strong colour reflection in the sun. As such, Mirage captures the energy of nature and the vibrancy of city life; Marcelis based her design on the duality between the warm sun on the desert sand during the day and the sparkling lights of the city at night. The works use the unique characteristics of glass to create layered objects that act both as mirror and light source.
Vakjury
As a designer, Sabine Marcelis is a magician with materials who has worked for years with a specialised Dutch glass manufacturer to develop new applications. Mirage as a product is an experience more than anything else. The work has an almost monumental quality, like a natural phenomenon that has been transformed into matter. The objects reflect the reality of Dubai both literally and figuratively; the city consists of a series of glass towers in the desert. At the same time, the more sober elements create a minimalistic aesthetic in a place where excess and ornamentation are usually predominant. A very enigmatic work, that translates the contrast between desert and city into reflection and light.
