A fictive design research project that has been developed with patients and the Mistral rehab clinic team in The Hague. It uses the associative strength of smell for evoking emotional memories among young patients and researches the effects of this on the treatment. The research has resulted in the Kindred Spirits series: different prototypes that stimulate and deepen the dialogue between patient and practitioner.

The committee especially appreciates the research that underpins Kindred Spirits: implemented extensively and thoroughly, in consultation with many different parties, with the most underexposed sense (smell) in the leading role. The outcome of the project is speculative and consequently alienating, but for the same reason appeals to the imagination. Inspiring and encouraging: new design appears to lead to new responses and improved interaction. The project also offers handles for future alternative methods within addiction care.
