Pedestrian bridge Fort de Roovere in Halsteren

The project

Architecture firm RO&AD were asked to build a bridge for defensive structure Fort de Roovere, it resulted in a trench that runs straight through both the dike and the moat. The sunken bridge pushes the water aside. Upon approach the ‘bridge’ is invisible until the cut appears. Visitors then descend a staircase to more than a meter below the water level.

Committee

The contradiction of bridging a defence is the central theme of the design. The bridge had to be invisible. Making a trench through the canal offers visitors the chance to ‘walk through the water like Moses’.
