New Station Square Apeldoorn

The project

The new Stationsplein is the entrance to the city of Apeldoorn. The semi-circular space in front of the station has both urban and landscape features. The square slopes down slightly towards the railway station. Lighting pylons randomly placed among the trees provide basic lighting. A spectacle is formed by the glass wall.

Committee

A carefully designed square, built up of many elements yet utterly cohesive. Splendid in its detailing, with interesting references to the scenic history of the spot. In terms of the logistics of a station square, however, a few critical comments – largely addressed to the commissioning party – could be made. The impressive artwork of the glass wall with its one million LEDs – a sand drift – fits in very well with the other elements of the design. The square, sharing the characteristics of a city square and a station square, is an asset to Apeldoorn and far beyond.
