Ed van der Elsken poster

The project

This poster serves as an announcement of the retrospective exhibition in the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam for Ed van der Elsken, famous for his photographs of daily life in the second half of the last century in Amsterdam and Paris. With the famous picture of two sisters dressed the same, his work is positioned pontifically central in the promotion. The frame and hand-written typography refer to the way in which Ed van der Elsken stuck down his prints and how he sometimes added comments to his prints in his own handwriting.

Committee

It would be all too easy to think that a good photograph quickly makes a good poster. This poster is different and suitable for nomination, because the decision to use a bright pink ‘frame’ within which black chalked letters for the announcement, demonstrates the boldness of the designers. The combination of these elements (photograph, pink frame and typography) in themselves produce a strong visual work to begin with. The design is especially eye-catching in the busy city. So striking that it stops you in your tracks. The committee sees all the design criteria for strong communication included in this poster. With this nomination the committee demonstrates its appreciation of the body of work by these top designers.
